How Elvira and the flag wavers killed immigration reform!

On immigration reform, I have a lot more in common with Bush and McCain than the "everything is amnesty" crowd. I have argued for years that the US needs a rational program to bring seasonal workers and more skilled ones, such as engineers.

We need them both.

What we don't need is Elvira and the Mexican flag wavers. They destroyed any chance for immigration reform with their arrogance, placards and total disrespect for the US, the nation that gave them work and the opportunity to send their kids to public schools and use city hospitals.

Why? Because Elvira and the flag wavers did not want to understand that we are nation of immigrants, but more importantly, a nation of laws!

Yesterday, Elvira blamed the US for Mexico's plight. (It's all NAFTA's fault!) Then she ranted that our immigration system is broken.

Indeed, our system is broken because Elvira and the flag wavers think that they are above the law.

Eventually, we will have a decent immigration overhaul. It won't happen until Elvira and the flag wavers get out of our TV screens!

The Dems and Iraq

The latest Dems' debate was OK. I did not hear anything worth quoting.

The best question was the one left unanswered. ("Were you tricked"?)

Hillary Clinton went into an amazing explanation about how Pres. Bush did not live up to giving the inspectors a chance to look for WMDs.

This is not a new line. She has tried this before. It is her latest way of explaining the war vote without admitting that it was a mistake, as John Edwards.

It's a very tricky dance! It works in front of Democrats who simply cover their noses and pretend. It won't work when she is standing next to Giuliani, McCain, Thompson or Romney. They are not going to let her get away with it! (HILLARY’S HYPOCRISY ON IRAQ By Dick Morris and Eileen McGann)

By the way, this explanation does not go over well with the leftist bloggers either! (Hillary Clinton's history lesson by Matthew Yglesias)

Someone from the press desk asked: Were you tricked, Senator Clinton?

We did not get an answer to that question.

Why? Because Senator Clinton will have to admit that her husband, the former president, lied to her about Saddam's WMDs, too.

What do you do when your husband goes on national TV, orders an attack on Iraq and claims that Saddam has WMDs. Check your calendar! December 16, 1998!

What do you do when VP Gore goes on TV and blasts Bush-41 for leaving Saddam in power? (Watch this Video.)

What do you do when you vote for the war by claiming a connection between Saddam and Al Qaeda?

Frankly, Senator Clinton needs to answer the "were you tricked" question?

This woman wants to be president of the US but she allows herself to be tricked by a bunch of CIA bureaucrats!

Beyond that moment, it was the usual attack on Bush-Cheney, insurance companies, etc.

On Iraq, the Democrats are now talking about keeping a residual force to fight Al Qaeda and protect our interests.

Of course, this is what Pres. Bush is doing.

Also, this is not what the anti-war voters elected them to do. How many of these Dems say in the last election that their goal was to leave troops in Iraq?

Overall, I don't think that there is a person on that stage who can go one on one with Giuliani, McCain, Thompson or Romney.

No one on that stage has had any executive experience, except for Gov. Richardson. At the same time, New Mexico is a very small state.

There are legislators on that stage. Yet, we have not elected a legislator since John Kennedy in 1960. Before that, I can't think of another one! (Governors Win)

The polling date confirms my point.

Despite all of Pres. Bush's problems, the head to head polls show that the Dems are stuck in 40s. It can not be very encouraging to know that their candidates can't break out at a time like this.

At the same time, this is what happens when you put lightweights like Obama, Edwards and Clinton on the stage. (Sorry Joe Biden. You are the only adult on that playground!)

Let's help Peru!

Peruvians have many reasons to be proud of their history. The Incas were a great people and left us many masterpieces. Today, Peru is another underachieving Latin American country with too many poor people and not enough property rights!

Peru is also the birthplace of Hernando de Soto---ILD, one of my favorite economists! Unfortunately, Peru's politicians have not listened to Mr. De Soto. Otherwise, their poor country would be a lot more prosperous.

Mr. de Soto has fresh ideas. See Giving the Poor Their Rights!

A few days ago, Peru had a terrible earthquake. Like other underdeveloped countries, Peru lacks the resources and infrastructure to face this natural disaster. As Mr. de Soto has said, poverty and underdevelopment compound these tragedies!

Peru Quake Survivors Grow Desperate By FRANK BAJAK is sad. Peru’s Troops Try to Restore Order in Areas Hit by Quake is pretty bad, too!

It's time for everyone to do their small part and contribute to Peru's victims.

Sanctuary cities must be cut off!

According to the latest Rasmussen:

"Fifty-eight percent (58%) of voters nationwide favor cutting off federal funds for “sanctuary cities” that offer protection to illegal immigrants." (
71% Favor Requiring Foreign Visitors to Carry Universal ID Card)

It makes sense to me. Sanctuary cities promote chaos because they are defying the rule of law.

Not surprisingly, the public mood is getting more and more sour on immigration reform:

"A recent survey found that
79% of voters favor strict measures requiring employers to fire workers who provide false identification documents.

Seventy-four percent (74%) also believe that proper identification should be required for anyone to rent an apartment."

Why? Because illegal immigration is chaos. You can see this chaos in our cities, school districts, hospitals, etc.

Recently Rep. Lamar Smith
wrote:

"The public officials who openly advocated the creation of "zones of protection" for lawbreakers are responsible for contributing to a flood of illegal immigrants in this country today. These policies have created an even bigger illegal immigration problem."

He is right. Sanctuary cities are a magnet for illegal immigrants, the good ones as well as the bad ones! Unfortunately, sanctuary cities are are attracting criminal elements, such as repeat offenders and gang members.
We saw this in Newark, where three good teenagers bound for college were killed by someone who should have turned over to ICE years ago! (Newark Triple Murder Fuels Debate on Treatment of Illegal Immigrants)

As I have written before, it is the duty of the federal government to protect our borders. It's time for Pres. Bush to call on some of these cities to respect law. Otherwise, he should sign an executive order denying federal funds.

Again, this is about the rule of law. We should not live in a society where people choose what laws to respect. (Mark Steyn: Speaking of sanctuary, where's ours?)

The public wants immigration laws enforced, and now! (Public Support Strong for New Immigration Enforcement)

P.S. Speaking of the 2008 election, I continue to insist that immigration is going to be sleeper issue. (Immigration In '08)

PM Rod-Zapatero amd immigration!

Spain's PM JL Rodriguez-Zapatero took a cheap shot at the US during a recent visit to Mexico City.

He criticized the fence under construction at the US-Mexico border. ("There is no wall that can obstruct the dream of a better life,")

What "better life" is PM Rod-Zapatero talking about? Could it be the "better life" that Mexicans find in the US rather than Mexico?

Of course, taking shots at the fence is great stuff in front of Mexican politicians.  Why not destroy the fence that Mexico built around itself?  (i.e. country can't create jobs!)

Why is PM Rod-Zapatero taking shots at US immigration concerns. Because PM Rod-Zapatero does not want to talk about Spain's own problems:

"It could be that Zapatero was just trying to divert attention away from a damning report by the New York-based Human Rights Watch that accuses Spanish authorities of mistreating and neglecting hundreds of migrant African children at holding centers on the Canary Islands.

Or perhaps he was still fuming that US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, during her recent six-hour stopover in Madrid, did not extend the long-awaited invitation for Zapatero to visit the White House.

But within Europe, few countries have a more troubled-indeed contradictory-approach to illegal immigration than does Spain." (Spain's Bluster Masks an Immigration Crisis By Soeren Kern, Senior Analyst for Transatlantic Relations at the Madrid-based Grupo de Estudios Estratégicos / Strategic Studies Group.)

In this article, Soeren Kern points out that Spain is desperately in need of labor:

"Another reason is because at 0.7 children per woman, Spain has one of the lowest birthrates in the world, and studies show that to keep the Spanish pension system from bankrupting, immigrants will have to make up 20 percent of Spain's population by 2030.

Spain's demographic crisis is so troubling that Zapatero has just promised to pay a 2,500 euro ($3,400) "baby bonus" for every newborn child as an incentive to boost the birthrate."

Spain's dilemma is simple: No babies and a socialist prime minister who runs away from terrorists!

Protect us from Chinese toys and anti-free trade Dems!

My kids are too old to buy Chinese toys. So I do not have direct experience with Made in China toys.

Naturally, every common sense effort should be made to protect us from faulty manufacturing. Let me repeat: common sense efforts!

Unfortunately, the anti free trade Democrats are in full gear and turning the Chinese toys story into something else:

"Parents will decide in coming months how much they trust products made for Mattel in China, but Mr. Durbin is not helping nervous financial markets. Most investors know that consumers will punish companies for safety problems, but that politicians pose an even greater threat if they use the product recalls as an excuse for protectionism." (Toy Story)

Let the parents decide. In the meantime, the Dems are in an anti-free trade bashing mode.

Let's look at NAFTA, a law signed by Democrat Pres. Clinton. NAFTA has been good for the US:

"Their maligning of the North American Free Trade Agreement is a perfect example.

Its adoption in 1993 helped kick off one of the great periods of sustained economic health in U.S. history.

The resulting explosion in trade with Canada and Mexico was crucial to the creation of more than 17 million new jobs, resulting in a five-year stretch in which the jobless rate was under 5 percent every year for only the second time since World War II.

Yet to hear Democrats tell the story, NAFTA has actually been catastrophic – especially for those with manufacturing jobs.

In fact, economist Daniel Ikensen reports that in 2006, “the manufacturing sector achieved record output, record sales, record profits, record profit rates and record return on investment.”

If that comes as a surprise, no wonder.

Between economic insecurities in an era of globalization and years of politicos' and pundits' populist demagoguery, many myths about the supposed downside of trade are firmly entrenched in voters' heads.

What's particularly perverse about America's lurch toward economic know-nothingism is that it comes even as the rest of the world comes around to the wisdom of the free-market U.S. approach.

After watching the United States create 10 times as many private sector jobs in the 1980s and 1990s – 40 million vs. 4 million – Europe now has similar job-creation numbers, thanks to its moves away from statism.

Yet Democrats push to embrace Europe's failed approach even as Europe abandons it. So much for rational policy-making." (Lying about trade)

Protect us from bad toys. Protect our nation from demagogues, a.k.a. Dems in the pockets of the labor unions!

It's time for Elvira to obey the law!

Yes, I feel some sympathy for Elvira Arellano. At the same time, I think Elvira needs to stop hiding and face the consequences of breaking the law. After all, I don't get to choose what laws to obey.

Elvira's story is a one of mistakes and more mistakes. (Illegal Alien Hiding in Church to Come Out and Lobby Congress)

She does not seem to understand that countries have laws and we are supposed to obey them:

"Arellano came illegally to the U.S. in 1997. She was deported shortly thereafter, but returned and worked different jobs, including childcare.

She moved to Illinois in 2000 because she had friends in the Chicago area and took a job cleaning planes at O'Hare International Airport.

She was arrested in 2002 at O'Hare and later convicted of working under a false Social Security number.

She was to surrender to authorities last August, but decided instead to take refuge at her church."

Now, Elvira is planning to lobby Congress to amend immigration laws.

Like so many others, Elvira is blaming the US rather than marching in front of the Mexican embassy in Washington DC or Los Pinos in Mexico City.

After all, doesn't Mexico have immigration laws too?

Aren't foreign nationals in Mexico expected to obey local laws? I obeyed Mexican laws during my 4 years in Mexico. I had to get a work visa (FM2) and pay income taxes in Mexico. I had to buy automobile insurance.

Along the way, Elvira compounded the situation by having a baby out of wedlock.

Where is the father? Why isn't he paying for her son's expenses? Why aren't more Mexican men taking responsibility for the kids dumped on US taxpayers?

I agree with It's time to get out:

"Arellano argues she should be allowed to stay because her son is a U.S. citizen, and she doesn't want to have to leave him to the care of a guardian.

But she also doesn't want to take him back to Mexico where he might lose his English-speaking skills.

Her argument weakens when we see Saul, alone, on television pushing his mother's cause, while she's holed up in the church.

It's time Arellano stop using Saul as bait -- like the shrewd panhandlers on the L parading their young for change.

The game is over. Elvira Arellano: You've pulled out all the stops, breaking the law, while eloquently stating your case. Your by-any-means-necessary moment is over.

Take your son, and start a new life in Mexico."

Thank you Chicago Sun Times!

It's time for Elvira to go back to Mexico and force her nation's politicians to do something about the country's underachievement. Elvira should challenge her nation's political class to change and allow Mexicans to live in a prosperous land. After all, there is no excuse for Mexico to be a poor country. How can a nation blessed with so many resources be so poor?

Furthermore, Elvira should identify the boy's father and file for child support in Mexico.

What does Rove drive these people mad?

In the 1950's, Casey Stengel was the most hated man in American League ballparks. Why did the amiable Casey make so many people mad? He managed the Yankees, who won the AL pennant over and over again.

Back to Rove. What did Rove do:

"His crucial insight in 2000 was recognizing that Mr. Bush had to be both an alternative to Bill Clinton's scandalous behavior and "a different kind of Republican."

In 2002, the president's party gained seats in both the House and Senate in a first midterm election for the first time since 1934.

And in 2004, for only the second time in history, a president won re-election while helping his party gain seats in both houses of Congress; the other time was 1936.

Much has been made of John Kerry's ineptitude, but the senator won some eight million more votes than Al Gore did in 2000, and Mr. Rove claims Democrats outspent Republicans by $148 million thanks to billionaire donations to "527" committees.

Yet amid a difficult war, Mr. Bush won by increasing his own vote by nearly 25% over 2000, winning 81% of U.S. counties.

The Rove-Ken Mehlman turnout effort was a spectacular achievement.

If it did nothing else, that 2004 victory put John Roberts and Samuel Alito on the Supreme Court." ('The Mark of Rove' By PAUL A. GIGOT)

That's a pretty good record.

True, Bush lost the House and Senate in 2006. Yet, his "6th year losses" were inferior to FDR in '38. And, every modern president has suffered losses in his second mid-term.

It is hilarious to watch the Dems' reaction. (Rove Derangement Syndrome) and (Rove's Brain)!

They hate Rove. In reality, they are scared of him.

Dumb husband, dumber lawsuit

Our legal system is turning into a division of Comedy Central.

First, a man sues a laundry for $60 million dollars. (
Plaintiff Who Lost Pants Loses $54 Million Suit Against Dry Cleaner)

Second, someone sues McDonalds because hot coffee fell on his laps while he was driving.

Yesterday, we learned that a Texan is suing a florist over flowers. What happened:

"In April, Greer sent his girlfriend flowers, a stuffed animal and a card that read: "Just wanted to say that I love you and you mean the world to me! Leroy."

The company promised Greer that it would send nothing to his home, according to the lawsuit.

But 1-800-flowers.com later sent a coupon and a thank-you card to Greer's home.

His wife saw the card, called the company and asked for a receipt, according to the lawsuit.

The florist faxed the receipt to his wife, and it showed Greer spent $100 and detailed the message on the card.

Included in a lawsuit is a copy of the receipt, along with a handwritten note on the bottom of the page written by Greer's wife.

She faxed the receipt with her note to her husband at work.

The note reads: "Be a man! If you got caught red handed then don't still lie."

Greer said the florist should not have sent his wife information about the love letter." (Man sues florist when wife discovers affair from receipt )

As always, someone is claiming mental anguish. Frankly, what about my mental anguish? We are the ones who are stuck with crowded dockets and over worked courthouses because of stupid lawsuits like this.

How would I fix this? Let the man, the wife and girlfriend work out their mental anguish. Keep the rest of us out of it!

Finally, how about common sense 101: Don't use a credit card to send flowers to a girlfriend if you are married!

Why is The NY Times breaking so many liberal hearts?

Two weeks ago, The NY Times created a lot of conversation with A War We Just Might Win By Michael E. O’Hanlon and Kenenth M. Pollack. It was a positive review of the Iraq situation from a couple of Democrats! O'Hanlon and Pollack went to Iraq and came back with good news!

Today, The NY Times has a front page story giving the anti-war left a lot to get indigestion about:

"Even as they call for an end to the war and pledge to bring the troops home, the Democratic presidential candidates are setting out positions that could leave the United States engaged in Iraq for years." (Democrats Say Leaving Iraq May Take Years )

How about that? The Dems are talking from both sides of their mouths.

Thank God for Pres. Bush. At least, he tells you where he stands!

How is Code Pink going to react to the Democrats? What are the pink ladies going to do when they realize that the Democrats have been playing games with them for years?

Seriously, what we are seeing is a bit of reality creeping into our politics. It's easy to criticize Bush. It's a lot more complicated to give us an alternative plan!

Most Democrats understand that a premature withdrawal would create a disaster. In other words, most Democrats agree with Pres. Bush on that point. Unfortunately, most Democrats do not have the courage to say that Pres. Bush is right!

The Dems do not have advantages over Republicans in 2008!

According to pundits, 2008 should be a good year for Democrats. However, you don't see that in polls. In fact, Rasmussen Reports has a dramatic
poll:

"While America’s voters are not particularly happy with the current Republican President, the leading Democratic Presidential Candidates have no advantage over the top GOP Hopefuls when it comes to Iraq, the Economy, or Restoring the Nation’s Optimism. Democratic candidates do have an edge when it comes to the environment while the GOP candidates hold the lead on immigration. Among the nation’s pool of unaffiliated voters, the GOP candidates also have the edge when it comes to the economy."

In other words, the Dems are not persuading Americans that they have solutions to our serious problems.

Where were you in 1974?

It's hard to believe but Gerald Ford assumed the presidency 33 years ago today. It happened at noon when Ford became the 38th president of the US! He said this:

"I am acutely aware that you have not elected me as your President by your ballots, and so I ask you to confirm me as your President with your prayers." (Gerald Ford, Orator! By Quin Hillyer)

Ford was not a great communicator, in the sense of Reagan. Yet, he reassured a troubled nation that our constitution works.

Last December, Pres. Ford was buried by a grateful nation. Today, we remember his words.

We love Pres. Ford!

Pres. Bush is getting his way with the Congress!

As of today, you have to say that Pres. Bush is doing quite well against the Democrat Congress.

I'm not just talking about the 3% poll! (UPI/Zogby Poll)

I'm talking about getting things done. The Democrat majority has not shut down the war. Instead, Pres. Bush is still having his way in Iraq!

The Democrats have not passed any of their legislative agenda, except for the minimum wage increase which was actually attached to the last Iraq War funding bill.

Why? The Democrats can not agree among themseleves. As I wrote before, it was a lot easier to be a Democrat when they sat in the bleachers and second guessed the coach!

It's enough to drive a few Democrats a little crazy!(Frustrated Democrats head for summer break)

Check the weekend headlines: The House Approves Wiretap Bill.....the US Senate did the same thing the day before:

"The bill would give the
National Security Agency the right to collect such communications in the future without a warrant. But it goes further than that: It also would allow the interception and recording of electronic communications involving, at least in part, people "reasonably believed to be outside the United States" without a court's order or oversight."

The Congress gave Pres. Bush everything and more. At times, the debate was silly:

"At times it sounded as if many lawmakers are more preoccupied with bashing Mr. Gonzales and the Bush administration than in preventing al Qaeda from striking the homeland once again." (The FISA debate)

Can the Democrats do anything without bashing Bush, Cheney or Gonzalez? Not likely! However, in the end, Pres. Bush won.

Why? Why can't Dems use their majority status to get anything done?

Call it the ghost of 1972!

In 1971, the Democrat left took over the party and drove it into an inflexible anti-war position. By mid-1972, Pres. Nixon started to withdraw troops and the Democrats were left with anti-war candidate and no war!

On Election Day 1972, Pres. Nixon won 61% of the popular vote and 49 states!

We are getting good news from Iraq. (Perceptions of Iraq War Are Starting to Shift By Michael Barone)

My guess is that Gen. Petraeus will give a mixed report and downplay the good news. I don't think that the Bush administration wants to raise expectations. At the same time, I believe that Gen. Petraeus will buy enough time for Pres. Bush to give the surge until next spring.

The Iowa debate

The Iowa debate on ABC was OK. Like previous debates, there are too many people on the stage. Why do we have a candidate who is polling 1 or 2%?

Sooner or later, we need to send Tancredo, Brownback, Paul, and Tommy Thompson home. I would keep Huckabee because he is making inroads with voters. I would also give Duncan Hunter another chance because he is a very serious contributor.

Beyond that, Giuliani (Rudy 2008 ) and Romney (Team Mitt ) were great. Romney had a great line about Sen. Obama:

"I mean, in one week he went from saying he's going to sit down, you know, for tea, with our enemies, but then he's going to bomb our allies," said Romney. "I mean, he's gone from Jane Fonda to Dr. Strangelove in one week."

That's good stuff. Obama should be challenged like this!

Guliani went further:

"In four debates, not a single Democrat said the word, 'Islamic terrorists.' Now that is taking political correctness to extreme," he said."

Bring it on!

McCain (McCain 2008) was a bit reserved but he said that we would never surrender:

"I firmly believe that the challenge for the 21st century is a challenge against radical extremism," McCain said."

Where was Fred Thompson? When is he going to show up?

Last, but not least, Huckabee (Huckabee 2008) had another great line about the IRS audit and the mugger. Huckabee looks to me like the perfect VP choice for any of the top three!

Overall, the candidates kept a strong position on Iraq. It does appear that the surge and good news from Iraq is uniting Republicans!

Obama wants to invade Pakistan!

What does it take to get the Dems presidential nomination? You oppose the war in Iraq. Frankly, there are no other qualifications!

Today, Senator Obama went further. He wants to invade Pakistan! In fact, he wants to move our troops from Iraq to Pakistan.

As always, our Captain Ed calls it right:

"One of the reasons that Democrats insist that the war in Iraq was a mistake was because it unnecessarily radicalized Iraqis into jihadists. What does Obama think an invasion of Pakistan will do to its population? And if the former was a mistake, consider that Pakistan has a population of over 160 million people. How does Obama think they will react to a military invasion by a putative ally?"

Obama may be reacting to his comments about meeting dictators. Or, he may be just expressing how unprepared he is to deal with presidential issues.

One way or another, it is not helping the Democrats. Check this out from the latest Gallup Poll:

"The public usually views the Republican Party as better on terrorism than the Democratic Party, so it is no surprise to see Giuliani and McCain well ahead of the other candidates in public confidence on this issue." (Public Confidence in Presidential Hopefuls on Key 2008 Election Issues)

How silly has the Dem party become? Just listen to them. They are not very serious at all.
